Bonking

Bonk?

Even when you're fit, there are times when you have an off day, when nothing goes right. And as always, running doesn't care if you're fit or not, it'll hit you just as hard. My off day in my come back to health was today.

At the moment I'm running 3 times a week for around 30-35mins, with Bobby in his quest to get fit for his bi-annual fitness test at work. This is working quite well as we're both around the same level at the moment.

He was still in bed though and I had a full day of baking ahead for the after School Christian Club I'm a leader at, so I decided to go it alone first thing. I kept to HR, which behaved better than it has been doing, but I was feeling a bit heavy legged. I'd done a 40min cardio aerobic/dancing/kickboxing session the previous afternoon which had woken up some dormant muscles. However, I got through it, and it was a lovely bright morning - what was there not to enjoy?!

I managed just short of 45mins which was more than the previous day so all good.

Got home to find Bobby ready for his run, so decided to accompany him for another 3.5miles. This is where it went horribly wrong. Within the first half mile I was treading water and heading for trouble. When we stopped to go through a gate at a mile in, I thought I was going to pass out as everything started spinning. I managed to stay upright though and thanks to Bobby chatting to me all the time (about marathons of all things, and Andy Carrolls transfer from The Toon to Liverpool), I made it home. I didn't say anything at the time as I didn't want to worry him. He did later admit that he's never seen me looking so ill on a run which is why he didn't leave me despite my insistence. Little does he know that I've hit darker places in some of the marathons I've ran - he's runs because he has to, not because he wants to, and he hates it. He openly admits he doesn't really 'get' or appreciate why we put ourselves through the various mental and physical barriers.

All totalled, I did just short of 8 miles and around 80-85 mins of running which is the longest since my October marathon, by a huge amount. Pleased as punch but tired as hell.

Lesson for today - remember not to get carried away, and, REMEMBER TO EAT AND DRINK SOMETHING before running!!
