Bonking

Bonk?

Even when you're fit, there are times when you have an off day, when nothing goes right. And as always, running doesn't care if you're fit or not, it'll hit you just as hard. My off day in my come back to health was today.

At the moment I'm running 3 times a week for around 30-35mins, with Bobby in his quest to get fit for his bi-annual fitness test at work. This is working quite well as we're both around the same level at the moment.

He was still in bed though and I had a full day of baking ahead for the after School Christian Club I'm a leader at, so I decided to go it alone first thing. I kept to HR, which behaved better than it has been doing, but I was feeling a bit heavy legged. I'd done a 40min cardio aerobic/dancing/kickboxing session the previous afternoon which had woken up some dormant muscles. However, I got through it, and it was a lovely bright morning - what was there not to enjoy?!

I managed just short of 45mins which was more than the previous day so all good.

Got home to find Bobby ready for his run, so decided to accompany him for another 3.5miles. This is where it went horribly wrong. Within the first half mile I was treading water and heading for trouble. When we stopped to go through a gate at a mile in, I thought I was going to pass out as everything started spinning. I managed to stay upright though and thanks to Bobby chatting to me all the time (about marathons of all things, and Andy Carrolls transfer from The Toon to Liverpool), I made it home. I didn't say anything at the time as I didn't want to worry him. He did later admit that he's never seen me looking so ill on a run which is why he didn't leave me despite my insistence. Little does he know that I've hit darker places in some of the marathons I've ran - he's runs because he has to, not because he wants to, and he hates it. He openly admits he doesn't really 'get' or appreciate why we put ourselves through the various mental and physical barriers.

All totalled, I did just short of 8 miles and around 80-85 mins of running which is the longest since my October marathon, by a huge amount. Pleased as punch but tired as hell.

Lesson for today - remember not to get carried away, and, REMEMBER TO EAT AND DRINK SOMETHING before running!!

It's All Good

It's all good

What I love about running outweighs what I don't like. This is just as well considering how out of shape I am at the moment. If I wasn't as in love with the sport as I am maybe I would've given up ages ago. Running doesn't discriminate, it just shows you up if you let your fitness slip. My lack of fitness is down to illness rather than lack of trying but still, it's a bitter pill to swallow. However, you get out what you put in so instead of panicking and trying to 'cram' which I've been more than guilty of in the past, I'm taking it all in my stride, and rolling with it. I have no races planned (despite getting itchy feet) and therefore no pressure to build up miles. Running has given me superb fitness in the past, but now, I'm happy that it's giving me exercise, and a reason to feel alive.

My cold feels much better. I'm still snotty, still coughing a bit, but experience told me that it was safe to resume some light exercise this morning.

It was freezing outside but so lovely to be doing something that even my troublesome hip, which was quite sore for the first mile, couldn't stifle my enjoyment. My challenge for today was to smile whilst running. After all, it takes less muscles to smile than it does to frown so how hard could it be?? Ha! Well, it was more fun than I thought although I reckon the various people I met along the way thought I was a class A lunatic.

The run went ok, as far as runs go when you're out of shape. I tried to run to HR but being so unfit, this was difficult to do as any slight movement elevated it into zone 5. My garmin was giving me the sort of figures I'd expect from running a flat out 5k.
The positives from this run were that I only stopped to unlock/lock the gates, and, I ran nearly a mile more than I did last week - 4.25miles.

Can't be more pleased and I'm planning to do some dancing/aerobics this afternoon. I guess it's true that exercise gives you increased energy. Happy, happy, happy!
